New York City Crowned the World’s Most Stressful City, Study Finds

New York City tops Remitly’s global stress rankings, which analyzed over 170 major metropolitan areas.

This study gave New York a stress score of 7.56 out of 10, driven largely by its exceptionally high cost of living, with a benchmark index score of 100. Lengthy daily commutes and ongoing concerns about crime and public safety further pushed the city into the number-one spot.

Remitly’s assessment examined five categories:

  • cost of living
  • commute congestion
  • crime levels
  • pollution
  • access to healthcare

Despite these challenges, New York performed surprisingly well in air quality and healthcare availability, providing a small counterbalance to its more stressful characteristics.

Unsurprisingly, locals—particularly in Staten Island—may not be shocked by the results, as recent City of Yes zoning updates have already stirred debate and heightened residents' concerns.

In contrast, Eindhoven, the Netherlands, ranked as the least-stressed city, with a score of just 2.34. After New York, Dublin landed in second place among the world’s most stressed cities, with Mexico City close behind. Manila and London completed the top five.

Rounding out the top 10 were Milan, Athens, São Paulo, Turin, and Kolkata—cities facing their own mix of financial, safety, and environmental pressures.

Ultimately, the report echoes what many New Yorkers have long said: living in one of the world’s priciest and busiest cities brings constant challenges, especially in affordability, transportation, and day-to-day safety.
